Root Canal Treatment (Endodontic treatment) is the treatment option when tooth is infected either due to decay or trauma. It involves removal of infected Blood and nerve supply (pulp) of tooth, followed by cleaning, disinfecting, filling and sealing of the root canals from where the infected tissue is removed.

What is the procedure of Root canal treatment?

1. Diagnosis:
   • Your dentist will examine your tooth and may use X-rays to determine the extent of the damage or infection in the pulp.
2. Anaesthesia:
   • Before the procedure begins, the dentist administers local anaesthesia to ensure you are comfortable and pain-free throughout the treatment.
3. Access Opening:
   • The dentist creates a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
4. Cleaning and Shaping:
   • The infected or damaged pulp is removed from the pulp chamber and root canals using specialized instruments.
   • The interior of the tooth is cleaned and shaped to prepare for the filling material.
5. Filling:
   • The cleaned space is filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to seal the root canals and prevent re-infection.
   • In some cases, a post may be placed to provide additional support for a dental crown.
6. Temporary or Permanent Seal:
   • The access opening is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling material to protect the tooth.
7. Restoration:
   • In many cases, a tooth that has undergone a root canal will need a crown to restore its strength and appearance.
   • The dental crown is customized to match the shape and colour of your natural teeth.

Yes, because the infection will damage the bone supporting the infected teeth and will also spread to adjacent teeth. So, it is better to get it treated as soon as the condition is identified.

4.Is it compulsory to go for the crown/ Cap for the tooth, after the root canal treatment is done?

A root canal treated tooth is essentially a dead tooth, as its infected nerve and blood supply will be removed. So eventually the tooth will become week and there is more chance of fracture. It is best to go with the crown after root canal treatment, to maintain the longevity of tooth.
