Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure designed to lighten the color of teeth and remove stains and discoloration. The goal is to enhance the overall appearance of the smile by making the teeth appear brighter and whiter.

There are two primary methods of teeth whitening:

1. In-Office Teeth Whitening:

   • Procedure: In-office teeth whitening is performed at a dental office by a qualified dental professional. It typically involves the application of a high-concentration whitening gel to the teeth.
   • Activation: The whitening gel may be activated by a special light or laser, accelerating the whitening process.
   • Duration: In-office treatments usually take about 1 to 2 hours, and patients can see noticeable results after just one session.

2. At-Home Teeth Whitening:

   • Customized Take-Home Kits: Dentists may provide patients with custom-made trays and a lower-concentration whitening gel for at-home use.
   • Application: Patients fill the trays with the whitening gel and wear them for a specified period, usually for a few hours each day or overnight.
   • Duration: At-home treatments may take a week or more to achieve the desired results, and the duration of use depends on the concentration of the whitening agent.

How Teeth Whitening Works: Teeth whitening agents typically contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as the active ingredient. These compounds break down into oxygen molecules, which penetrate the enamel and dentin layers of the teeth. The oxygen molecules react with the discolored molecules in the teeth, breaking them down and causing the teeth to appear whiter.
